Ruth and John lived in a white house on a hill overlooking Monterey Bay, surrounded by a pine forest. I remember their garden full of flowers and English peas you could eat right from the vine. I would go out the back gate and sit on a fallen tree in the forest, pretending I was in the real wilderness (that was as close as I could get being from Chicago).
They raised three children in this house — Junia, John, and Robert/Bob.
